University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders maintains his public display of Christian faith in the face of advocacy group criticism..
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) wrote to the university in September to express its worries about Sanders' mix of Christianity with football activities. The FFRF contended those actions could create pressure on student-athletes along with threatened violations of church-state constitutional boundaries. (Ffrf.org)
At a press conference Sanders addressed concerns by declaring "My relationship [with God] is tremendous." It's not going to cease. It's not going to stop. Don't expect me to hide my message about Jesus Christ. My Bible shows me to preach my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to anybody I wish because following scripture is how I live my life. The message is straight from my Bible that no one can stop me from preaching Jesus Christ. (Athlon Sports)
Sanders received guidance from the University of Colorado about how his faith activities impacted his duties as a coach.
University executive Patrick T. O’Rourke noted that Sanders received "very receptive" feedback during his training which helped him develop "a better understanding" of Colorado University policies and what falls under Establishment Clause requirements. (Deseret.com)
During ongoing discourse about religious expression Sanders maintains his open sharing of faith together with his belief in its essential role for both his personal life and sports instruction methods.
