Mother of Karmelo Anthony Speaks Out

On April 17, 2025, Kayla Hays, the mother of 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, spoke publicly for the first time following her son's arrest for the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Frisco, Texas.

At the press conference, Hays shared how deeply the situation has impacted her family. She said they’ve been overwhelmed by online threats and the spread of misinformation. Their home address and her husband’s workplace were shared publicly, leading to safety concerns. Her husband has taken a leave from work, and their younger daughter is now afraid to sleep in her own room.

Hays also addressed rumors about a legal defense fund, clarifying that her family has not received any money from online fundraising efforts. She denied claims that they had purchased a new home or luxury vehicle, calling such accusations completely false.

While expressing sympathy for the Metcalf family, Hays asked for understanding and fairness as the legal process unfolds. “Our son deserves the same rights under the law that everyone else is afforded,” she said.

Austin Metcalf’s father was present at the press conference but was asked to leave so the Anthony family could speak without interruption.
