The Death of DEI Through Trump's Executive Order

Updated: Jan 29

Recent executive orders established by President Donald Trump fundamentally modify federal policies related to diversity equity and inclusion (DEI). Executive orders have initiated the cancellation of all diversity equity inclusion (DEI) programs within government departments as well as the military.

Executive orders disband all DEI programs that operate throughout federal agencies along with military organizations. The president put administrative leave for all DEI staff while revoking preexisting DEI directives. (AP News)

These new executive orders officially eliminate both Executive Order 11246 and its national requirements for affirmative action as well as federal employment discrimination protections for contractors. Through this revocation process contractors no longer need to establish affirmative action programs as part of their operations according to the National Law Review.

The order denies people who belief their gender differs from their birth sex access to U.S. Military service based on concerns about their mental preparedness and physical condition.

These new military orders let discharged personnel keep their positions without requiring the vaccines while also granting them paid back wages.

The enforcement actions mark an important break with past federal diversity practices. Experts maintain that eliminating programs focused on diversity equity inclusion and affirmative action requirements could reverse years of successful progress toward eliminating employment inequality and uncovering discriminatory systems. These new initiatives defend supporters because they uphold fair compensation methods while removing what supporters consider unlawful favors.

Federal contractors lost their affirmative action program requirements when Executive Order 11246 received its revocation thereby damaging potential workplace diversity efforts.

Progressive military readiness policies struggle against questions regarding focusing exclusively on service standards instead of inclusivity for transgender candidates.

The enforcement of these policies will generate ongoing evaluations of their impact on government operations, contractor conduct, and military workforce dynamics while fostering ongoing dialogue about diversity and inclusion practices in government institutions and civil society.
